THE REWARD - Everyone has there day(s) when they don’t feel like practicing, it’s normal. YoYo Ma is a world renowned Cellist and I’ve heard him say that he doesn’t always like to practice. Sitting in front of a warm fire on a cold day is very satisfying. That satisfying moment is a result of the hard work of chopping wood. There’s the reward, a warm fire. The reward of playing a piece of music successfully comes after much practice. It takes initiative.

PRACTICE METHOD - The way you practice is important. It’s not about time, it’s about quality. Don’t just play through a piece with all your mistakes. Stop and correct them! Furthermore, the most common problem with all my students is playing through something too fast. Your brain is faster than your fingers so just take it slower for your fingers to catch up. Once you find the correct way of how to play the song, slowly repeat playing it to build strength and confidence in your performance. Repetition of the correct way brings reward.

GOAL SETTING - In music, it’s important to set goals so you have a reason to practice. These goals don’t have to be so big that they’re unreachable, they can be as simple as wanting to play a nursery rhyme with your right hand. One of my students came to me with no prior piano lesson or playing experience and told me her wedding was in 18 months and she wanted to play with her son who is a bassist on her special day. It happened, she played a Sonata successfully on her wedding day and has now been studying piano with me for three years. She put a lot of hard work learning bit by bit, three and four measures at a time in order to achieve her goal.

The more you can achieve little goals, the more “Yay” you will have in your musical journey.
